Emmie Kao
Emmie is a junior at The Bishop’s School. Her favorite subjects are math and science, and she also participates in Speech and Debate and Model United Nations. When she’s not in a Speech tournament, MUN conference, or math competition, Emmie plays soccer and tennis. Her favorite hobbies are reading and digital design. When I first started at Kid By Kid in eighth grade, I wanted to use my passion for math and reading/writing to teach younger students in these areas. Since then, I have grown as a mentor and learner due to the KBK experience. More importantly, KBK has also enabled me to make valuable connections with students that I would not have made elsewhere. I have had several students with whom I have connected, especially during the ‘break time’ allotted in sessions. Here, I have found students’ passions and interests, such as art and puzzles. KBK has driven me to continue tutoring students of all different ages, making meaningful connections that have proven to be invaluable for both my learner and myself.
Ava Bradley
Hi, my name is Ava, and I am a senior at the Bishop's School! In my free time, I love to write, read, paint, and sew (preferably all at once). I've been tutoring with Kid By Kid since my freshman year, and have enjoyed every bit of it. As a tutor, I've learned quite a bit myself, honing my explanation skills, teaching techniques, and patience. My favorite subjects are English, History, and Philosophy, so I understand the struggle that sometimes comes with understanding more cut-and-dry work. It has been very inspiring to witness my tutees gain more confidence by exploring learning techniques that work best for them throughout the years. Being able to talk to students who have lived vastly different experiences than I have and still connect has been immensely meaningful. I look forward to continuing working with Kid By Kid!
Elleaire Lyons
Hi there! My name is Elleaire. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to dedicate my time to my learners through Kid By Kid (KBK), since its inception in 2019. I started tutoring as a Sixth Grader and have loved being able to volunteer weekly - at first in-person and then online. Now a high school Sophomore, these past 5 years have been very rewarding for me. During that time, I've founded both the KBK-Coronado Middle School Chapter and KBK-Coronado High School Chapter. KBK originally began as an in-person program, but with the pandemic, those interactions were halted. The KBK founder's vision to pivot from an in-person to online platform enabled the lesson process and interaction to instead occur virtually; the goal was to help bridge the learning gap. Through tutoring 1-on-1 with my learners, I have made some really amazing connections and have been able to witness many “AHA” moments. I love that moment when the knowledge all makes sense, it really is so fulfilling as a tutor. My overall goal has been to make a positive impact on a fellow student’s academic journey, while successfully making it engaging and enjoyable. I feel the encouragement I provide, empower my learners to gain confidence and drive within themselves to become better students in the classroom. It’s really rewarding to watch my students showcase their growth as they obtain knowledge; KBK’s student-led model forges meaningful connections between tutors and learners. One of my favorite subjects to teach is math because students can sometimes feel less confident with their skills or uncertain of their abilities; I strive to make my learners feel comfortable in what they are learning and develop a better relationship with the subject for the future. A little bit about me, outside KBK, I enjoy the creative outlets of music (piano) and art - I have a few of my creations here: ellequinnart.com I have also been part of UCSD Center Community Health - Youth Advisory Council (YAC), since Middle School. As a third-year veteran, I focus my efforts and voice to advocate for youth-led social change within the community through YAC. Together we come up with focus topics with the goal of improving health, including mental health, of youth throughout San Diego. I’ve learned so much and really enjoy being a part of YAC; its forum allows adolescent insight to help shape better youth health outcomes in our community. In addition to KBK and YAC, I am also very involved with my school, being a student leader in Associated Student Body for 3 consecutive years. Also, I am the President of the NadoCAF Chapter for Coronado High School with the Challenged Athletes Foundations. Lastly, I play high school Varsity golf and play competitive golf here in San Diego. Being a part of these organizations and activities has helped me develop many important life and leadership skills such as responsibility, communication, empathy and an overall desire to make a positive impact within my community. KBK sparked my drive towards supporting others and I look forward to continuing to utilize my experiences to be a change-maker in my community.
Keira Dunn
Hi! My name is Keira Dunn and I’ve been tutoring with Kid By Kid for over 3 years. I love playing lacrosse, and my favorite subjects are English and History. Tutoring has given me many valuable skills that apply to tutoring as well as everyday life. Math and reading are my favorite subjects to teach, and seeing kids grow their learning ability in those subjects is a main reason why I love tutoring. Working with kids has always been a passion of mine, from babysitting to being a camp counselor, and tutoring is no different, especially if taught in ways that are fun and exciting. Another part of tutoring that is a favorite of mine is the breaks. Charades, mad libs, doodling, and other educational games to give the kids’ brains a break are a blast for both the learners and the tutors. Kid By Kid has given many learners and tutors, including me, wonderful experiences and valuable lessons that go far beyond academics.
Mia Gaspar
Hello, My name is Mia Gaspar and I have volunteered at Kid By Kid for the past two years. My favorite subjects are Chinese, Math, and Science! Outside of school I enjoy baking, Field Hockey, and music. As I am currently learning Chinese myself and my favorite subject to tutor in is Chinese. When it comes to language I am able to apply my skills that I have learned in school, and also strengthen them by practicing with the kids I tutor. Kid By Kid is so special because it has allowed me to learn the skills to help someone else approach a challenge. I have grown close to the kids I tutor and I love being able to learn more about them. I am so grateful for the opportunity that Kid By Kid has provided for me and the learners, and am so proud to be making a good impact on my community.

I’ve been volunteering with Kid By Kid since March of 2022 (with about 130+ hours of tutoring and lesson planning as of when I’m writing this); and I can honestly say I really love how this organization has helped people. It’s so fulfilling being able to see the tangible change you’re making in peoples’ lives. I’ve been able to make learning easier and more fun for people, which is such a gift. Plus, if they understand concepts as they’re taught, they’ll more easily keep up with future material too; and, they won’t give up on themselves by thinking they’re the types of people to never do well in school. 1 on 1 tutoring gives my time to understand how my specific tutors learn and what they find entertaining. For example, I’m tutoring one student in Chinese and I’ve been incorporating lots of different ways to learn (emoji battles, conversing about things he finds interesting, watching Chinese cartoons, etc…), and I think it’s really helped. Volunteering in Kid By Kid has helped me realize I want to work as a teacher and when I grow up. I’m so glad I’ve been able to make such a large change in my students’ educational paths, and I’m excited to tutor as much as I can in the future.

I chose Kid by Kid because I know not all students get the support they need in school. Knowing education is important, I'm happy to help those students. It's rewarding to know I have become close with a learner who I have seen grow since our very first lesson and is now comfortable to ask for help whether it's not understanding multiplication or wondering where humans came from.
Prachi Chetlur
Hi! My name is Prachi, and I've been a Kid By Kid tutor since eighth grade. Tutoring has been a very rewarding experience for me. There's immense satisfaction when I'm able to teach a new concept, or when a learner is able to grasp a topic that we've been working on. While I've been tutoring, I've learned a lot myself, like how to use different methods to teach different learners and how to make lessons engaging. This summer with Kid By Kid, I've been running a reading group for a few learners, where we read chapters and discuss them together. Overall, I've been able to take a lot out of Kid By Kid, and hopefully give back some as well. Outside of Kid By Kid, I enjoy reading, writing, and listening to music.
Addie West
Hi, my name is Addie West. I am in the class of 2026 at The Bishops School and have been with Kid By Kid since the 9th Grade. While I am at school I enjoy math and science, along with playing on the soccer and volleyball teams. The hours I spend outside of school, I will probably be walking around with friends, at the beach, or at home drawing.
Kaitlyn Lau
Hi! I’m Kaitlyn, a native Texan and a student at Round Rock High School. I am an engineer at heart, with a passion for improving things. My favorite subjects are math and science. At school, I am an active member of Math Honor Society, English Honor Society, varsity robotics team, and several other clubs to keep me well rounded. In my free time, I enjoy singing, perfecting origami, mastering Tae Kwon Do, and early-morning road-biking. In addition to tutoring at Kid By Kid, you’ll often find me both officially and unofficially tutoring my classmates in a variety of subjects, and teaching children at Sunday School. At the beginning of the pandemic, it was evident that children with fewer resources would suffer in their education. Having been home-schooled during my formative years, I knew the importance of early intervention to build a strong foundation and confidence. The pandemic compelled me to evaluate ways to help students who needed help most. I started small— tutoring one underserved student from an acquaintance for free. Subsequently while researching how to start a nonprofit to extend services to more underserved students, I discovered the amazing work Daxton Gutekunst had already begun in California with Kid By Kid. Instead of reinventing the wheels as an 8th grader, I decided to team up with Kid By Kid to start the first KBK chapter in Texas. Kid By Kid allows me to utilize my talent to teach and to build relationships with my students. It gives me joy to serve students who lack resources, to witness their improvements, and to empower them to succeed on their own.
Ellie Josephson
My name is Ellie Josephson and I am the founding chapter member of Kid By Kid at the San Diego Jewish Academy. I am a ninth grader at SDJA where I have been enrolled since Kindergarden. I love Math and I love helping others. I plan to one day go to medical school and become a doctor (not sure my specialty yet)! Kid by Kid has allowed me to help others and give back to my community. I love my weekly sessions and look forward to continuing tutoring through high school and beyond!
Dani T.
Hi, my name is Dani, and since starting my tutoring journey with Kid By Kid in August 2022, I never could have predicted the amount of personal growth it would bring. Engaging with children who often struggle in the classroom has given me valuable insights into their confidence levels, which directly correlate with their effort in schoolwork. Guiding my learners to build confidence in their intelligence and academics has revealed to me the incredible gift of helping others. The patience, understanding, and compassion I have cultivated through this organization have impacted other aspects of my life. My hobbies, such as volunteering, reading, boxing, and even playing sudoku, have all been enriched by the lessons I've learned while assisting others in their learning journeys. I am truly grateful for the transformative experience tutoring has provided me. :)
Luke S.
Hi, my name is Luke. I am going to Mission Bay High School and my favorite subjects in school are math and English. I hope to keep loving these subjects and spreading my love of these subjects through these tutoring sessions. I stay active by playing Soccer and Basketball with my friends. Something I like to do in my free time is hang out with my friends and watch movies. I also enjoy biking and hope to do it more throughout the years. I started tutoring through Kid By Kid during 6th grade and have loved it ever since. Some things I have learned during my experience is that every learner thinks and learns differently so you have to adapt to how they learn best. Once you find that out you can build a connection with your learner by continuously teaching them. This helps make it so that the tutor does not have to start anew on how to teach the learner. Another important part of tutoring is putting fun things in the lesson to immerse the learner. It is always good to have a five-minute break to let everyone reset their brain to continue thinking. I hope to continue tutoring and helping learners achieve their goal of learning.
Isabel V.
Hi! I’m Isabel. A dancer, writer, artist, skincare enthusiast who loves to laugh and have fun with family and friends…and my dog! When I first heard about Kid By Kid I knew it was a program that I would love. I have always been a nurturer by nature and drawn to jobs and activities with kids. Kid By Kid has provided me with an awesome opportunity to continue those efforts while positively impacting the learning path for young students. I love connecting with them so they know there is someone who cares and is excited for them to succeed! I have felt so much pride as I see the impact and progress our students make over time, and sometimes in just one session!
Sarthak Kapoor
Hello, my name is Sarthak Kapoor and I am 15 years old. I play tennis and badminton in my free time and I started tutoring my sophomore year with Kid By Kid and find that I absolutely love it! Tutoring allows me to share my knowledge and passion for a subject with other students. I was tutored when I was younger and it definitely helped me in my classes which is why I want to do the same for other people now that I am old enough to fill the shoes. Moreover, tutoring with KBK gives me the chance to develop good relations with my students. I love getting to know them as it helps me understand a lot more about who they are as a person and how I can tutor them the best way I can. I feel ecstatic when I’m able to positively influence my student’s success and see them develop. My skills as a tutor have also gotten much better after tutoring with KBK. I have mainly tutored math as it is my favorite subject. I want to thank this organization for giving me this opportunity to help these kids and along the way, grow as a person myself. With KBK’s president, Daxton, I was given the chance to work on the resource page for KBK’s website. It was a pleasure working with him and being able to offer my time. KBK has had such a positive influence on kids and I look forward to tutoring and helping out KBK in every way I can.
Zahra M.
Hello! My name is Zahra and I am 16 years old. I have many hobbies and extracurriculars, but my favorite is dance. I am a part of a performing company at my dance studio and also take classes at my school. In addition to dancing, I love music and track. I have been playing the cello since I was 10 years old and plan to continue playing through college. I also enjoy educating and working with young kids, which is why I felt right at home when I found Kid By Kid. Tutoring has taught me how to communicate more effectively and use my skills to directly serve the community. I am grateful for every connection I've made with the learners I tutor and look forward to continuing as a member of the Kid By Kid team. I find the impact that Kid By Kid tutors can provide for students in need to be incredibly important, and I would encourage everyone to consider contributing to this amazing program.
Sasha V.
Hello. I’m Sasha. I have always been a curious person and love learning. As a student I understand firsthand the difference a fun and dynamic teacher can make. I have been fortunate to have teachers that have inspired and encouraged me to go further and do more. Giving back and participating in my community has always been a part of my life, but through Kid By Kid I feel like I have been able to pay it forward with young learners. I love finding new and fun ways to help my students overcome their learning challenges or just realize that learning can be fun. In my free time I love hanging out with friends and family, playing and listening to music and throwing pottery.
Jessica Luu
Hello! My name is Jessica and I am a junior at La Jolla High School. Although I’ve been to many classes, math and science have always been my favorite subjects. When I’m not behind a desk, you can find me at the beach with my friends, or rewatching all 7 seasons of Gilmore Girls again for the hundredth time. Being a tutor at Kid By Kid has been such a rewarding experience. Every week, I get the opportunity to shape young minds by helping students reach their fullest potential. Seeing them slowly gain confidence in their abilities is one of the most fulfilling experiences one could ever ask for. The joy of seeing them thrive and knowing that you played a role in their development is what makes being a tutor at KBK so worthwhile.
Cameron Ko
Hi, my name is Cameron Ko. I started tutoring with Kid By Kid in the 6th grade in 2020 and founded the KidBy Kid chapter at Black Mountain Middle SchooI. When I first found out about the program, I was most excited about working with students from underserved communities and sharing my passion for learning. I am grateful for the guidance provided by founder Dax Gutekunst and feel fortunate to have received an award as a top tutor with over 80 individual lessons. As I enter 9th grade in the fall of 2023, I am on the Leadership Team of Westview High School’s chapter of Kid By Kid. I look forward to helping new tutors get started as it wasn’t long ago that I was shadowing a senior KBK tutor. I currently meet with my learner weekly to help reinforce English and math concepts that they are learning in school and need more practice with. During lesson breaks, I like to keep things fun by playing online educational games with my learner. Outside of KBK, I am a competitive swimmer and water polo player who enjoys traveling to new places, exploring different cities, and trying out local cuisines. I have also contributed to my former school by being a leader on campus as an Associate Student Body officer for two years. My favorite subjects in school are math and science and I plan to pursue engineering courses in high school. My interests include playing the trumpet and playing chess with my friends. My experience at Kid by Kid has been extremely rewarding and I would highly recommend it to others!
Kelly R.
Hello, my name is Kelly and I've been tutoring with Kid By Kid since the start of my junior year. A school club I joined offered the opportunity to volunteer with KBK so I immediately emailed and was able to begin tutoring. I especially love math, reading, and science, so sharing my love of learning with other kids has been a really great experience. Seeing a kid's progress after a lesson or the joy they get when they learn something is quite rewarding. To have the experience to tutor made the weekends of my junior year all the more better.
Angelina Kim
Angelina is a sophomore at The Bishop’s School and loves to read and hang out with her friends. Her favorite subjects are science and history, and she hopes that she can spread the joy of exploration she found in her classes and share her discoveries with Kid By Kid students. In her free time, Angelina does competitive sleeping and plays Exploding Kittens (which is a card game and thankfully doesn’t involve any violence towards kittens).
One recurring pattern that I have noticed throughout my education is that the more passionate a teacher is about subjects, the more their students learn and have fun. In fourth grade, one of my teachers taught us about the whole history of California within a couple of weeks and showed us how to take good notes. Her constant enthusiasm for history, kind smile, and great care for her students showed me how fun history and learning overall could be. When tutoring at Kid By Kid, I hope that I can share the same passion and enthusiasm that I have for what I teach and make their learning experience thorough and fun. Maybe someday they can share their passions with other students!

Jack Harvey
Hi! I'm Jack, a Junior at The Bishop's School. I've been with Kid by Kid for over two years. My favorite subjects in school are math and history. When I'm not working on schoolwork, you can find me working on a computer science project, listening to music, or at football practice after school. I love to apply my skills and love of learning wherever I can.
For as long as I can remember, I've been trying to explain things, and Kid by Kid gave me an important outlet to give back. I joined Kid by Kid because I've always loved the gratifying feeling that comes when you see the improvement of a learner. That feeling of understanding is evidence of the immense impact that Kid by Kid has had on hundreds of learners - I'm grateful for every opportunity that this program has given me.

Hi!

Hello.
